Central pulse wave: pathophysiology and clinical significance

Abstract

The emergence of relatively simple technologies noninvasive measurement of the central blood pressure (BP) and the accumulated data about its prognostic significance of the question about the possibility of optimization reduce cardiovascular risk associated with high BP by means of an additional assessment of BP directly at the level of target organs, especially in the aorta. Central BP is a kind of integrating indicator, which is determined by the state of the blood stream – from the heart and the aorta to the microvasculature. Assessment of central BP opens new prospects for the stratification of risk of development of cardiovascular complications, and for estimate of efficacy of antihypertensive therapy.
