Assessment of central hemodynamics in office workers of gas industry depending on stress level

Abstract

Sedentary lifestyle and chronic psycho-emotional stress are risk factors of cardiovascular pathology development.

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of stress associated with office work (on the example of administrative employees of the gas industry) on central hemodynamics.

Material and methods. The study included 20 administrative employees of the gas industry (10 men and 10 women), the average age of the subjects was 34±4.5 years. The work experience in this sphere was 5 years and more, the average value was 6.2±1.2 years. The level of anxiety was estimated by Spielberger–Hanin questionnaire. Central hemodynamics was evaluated by hardware blood pressure (BP) measurement and calculation of Kerdo index, stroke volume, total peripheral vascular resistance, cardiac index.

Results. At estimation of central hemodynamics parameters in the general group of patients we noted that diastolic BP (r=0.47, p=0.0558) and total peripheral vascular resistance (r=0.49, p=0.05) increased, while stroke volume (r= -0.56, p=0.007) and cardiac index (r= -0.35, p=0.04) decreased.

Conclusion. The increase in blood pressure and associated increase in peripheral vascular resistance is likely due to stress-induced glucocorticoid activation. Reduced stroke volume and cardiac index reflect functional remodeling of the heart as a target organ of stress-induced arterial hypertension and a tendency to develop heart failure.
