The importance of timely detection of sleep disorders as an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases

Abstract

One of the main strategic directions in the prevention of the cardiovascular diseases and their complications development is the timely identification and correction of well-known modifiable risk factors such as physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, arterial hypertension, psychosocial factors. Recent studies have shown a significant impact of sleep disorders on the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, their complications, as well as the peculiarities of their course. Several researchers consider sleep disorders such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Despite the extremely high prevalence of these conditions in the population, their detectability remains at an extremely low level. The development of outpatient diagnosis of sleep disorders makes the detection of apnea more accessible, unlike the era of polysomnological research.

Timely diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea and insomnia can minimize the risks of developing cardiovascular diseases and complications and, accordingly, increase the medical, social and economic effectiveness of the treatment.
