Administration of direct oral anticoagulants in patients with atrial fibrillation in real clinical practice

Abstract

In the article results of recent studies in direct oral anticoagulants administration in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation in daily clinical practice are represented. The results of retrospective observational studies that examined apixaban efficacy and safety in the patient cohort under real-life conditions have confirmed the global findings of ARISTOTLE randomized clinical trial. In addition, OAC-FORTA 2016 consensus document, developed by panel of experts and classifying DOAC in terms of necessity for their administration in elderly patients, considers apixaban to be the safest in this age group. Nevertheless, it should be considered expedient to plan and conduct prospective observational studies for evaluation of direct oral anticoagulants efficacy and safety in real clinical practice, design of which will be consistent with modern evidence-based medicine principles.
