Tropical diseases that cause myocardial damage

Abstract

In the structure of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in tropical countries, significant place is occupied by parasitic diseases that occur with myocardial damage. Indeed, usage of modern instrumental and laboratory diagnostic methods has led to the fact that tropical parasites are increasingly recognized as the causes of cardiovascular pathology. In this review parasites that infect myocardium most frequently are examined, among them protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi (causative agent of American trypanosomiasis - Chagas disease), and tapeworm Taenia solium (causative agent of teniasis and cysticercosis). Also tropical endomyocardial fibrosis, trichinellosis and schistosomiasis are discussed. For cardiovascular diseases control improvement in tropics, complex of organisational arrangements is required, that are aimed at personal, social and health population education, and social and economic conditions improvement. Currently, in view of intensive migration and tourist flows, knowledgeability of clinicians and medical officers throughout the entire world about imported parasitic diseases as potential causes of myocardial damage is on the front burner.
