Essential hypertension and other causes of atrial fibrillation in patients hospitalized in therapeutic clinic

Abstract

Objective. To evaluate the incidence of essential hypertension and other possible causes of atrial fibrillation in hospitalized patients of therapeutic profile in 1985–2010 years.

Design and methods. We analyzed 14 595 medical histories of the faculty therapy clinic of Saint-Petersburg State Medical University n.a. I.P. Pavlov for the periods from 1985 to 1990 years and from 2005 to 2010 years.

Results. The incidence of atrial fibrillation increased by 1,7 times over the past 25 years. There is a significant increase in the number of the patients with atrial fibrillation in combination with essential hypertension – 1,8 times, obesity – 1,9 times, diabetes mellitus type 2–3-fold. The incidence of valvular heart diseases in patients with atrial fibrillation decreased by 1,9 times from 1985 to 2010 year.

Statisti-cal significance of differences determined using Fisher’s exact test (p<0,0001).

Conclusion. The number of hospitalized patients with atrial fibrillation increased over the past 25 years 1,7 times. The number of the patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, particularly essential hypertension, significantly increased from 1985 to 2010 year and the number of the patients with rheumatic valvular heart disease decreased.
